Rome was not built in a day, and neither was the empire built by Renzo Rosso. However, in the case of the latter, the success story is dazzling enough to be reported. After starting to make (by hand) and sell his first denims when he was just a teenager, this son of a farmer who graduated from the Istituto Marconi in Padua took his first professional steps by joining in the 1970s the Moltex group, then owned by Adriano Goldschmied. Specializing in jeans, the company was at the time one of the largest in the sector in Italy. Aged only 23 and thanks to a loan of 4,000 euros financed by his father, he invested in the company and became 40% owner. A few years later, in 1978, the duo renamed the brand Diesel , in reference to the scale taken by this alternative fuel in the heart of oil chic. Eyebrows are raised, questions are numerous but the entrepreneurs are sure of themselves: in the face of Lee Cooper and Levi's , there is still room for a new name in denim , halfway between relaxation and refinement. In 1985, Renzo Rosso bought the rest of his partner's shares and became the sole owner of the label. Initially offering jeans, the brand gradually transformed itself to become a textile giant whose collections include t-shirts, shoes, various accessories and perfumes. However, far from stopping there, in the early 2000s Renzo Rosso acquired brands with heightened creativity as well as big independent names. In 2008, he founded the OTB group (Only The Brave), which now has majority shares in Maison Margiela , Marni , and Viktor and Rolf . Or how to build a textile empire, one hem at a time.
