Few accessories cross eras and social strata as well as Dr Martens boots. Since their launch in 1960, these combat boots mounted on air-cushioned soles remain as popular as ever and continue to gain ground. Born from the fusion of the know-how of la manufacture , established in the Midlands region (England) since 1901, and the ideas of doctors Klaus Maertens and Herbert Funk, two Germans keen on innovation. The history of the ankle boots actually begins in 1945, when soldier Klaus Maertens was recovering from a broken foot. To help his bones recover more quickly, he had the idea of creating a shoe with an air sole, much more comfortable than the products usually found on the market. Feeling that he had a bright idea, he presented it to his ami Herbert Funk, an academic who helped him launch the manufacture of his prototype in 1947. When the duo decided to promote their boots in 1959, their success is already well established in Germany. In England, Bill Griggs one day came across an advertisement extolling the merits of these shoes with their unparalleled comfort. Buying the license, he launched the first pair of Dr Martens on avril 1, 1960. Enhanced with a small heel and yellow stitching on the sole, the 1460 eight-eyelet boots were born. Popular with the working classes, they are sold at £2 per pair and sold by pallets. But in the 1970s, they became the prerogative of the first skinheads, before being taken over by broader trends in the 1980s. The craze was such that women and the US were also won over. But at the beginning of the 2000s, there was disappointment: the shoes lost their appeal and the brand was forced to close almost all of its factories in order not to declare bankruptcy. Saved by designers who began reinventing them around the world in 2007, Dr Martens finally left this bad patch behind them to once again become, even today, one of the most famous accessories in the world.
