Kenzo Men
It is one of those brands that leaves an indelible mark on haute couture and crosses generations with disconcerting ease. This is the case of Kenzo which, since the 1970s, has continued to carve out a place for itself in the world of luxury ready-to- porter . Very quickly passionate about fashion, Kenzo Takada began his journey at a design school based in Tokyo. Once he graduated in 1964, the Japanese designer left his native country to settle in Paris. There, Kenzo stood out in the fashion sphere and began his Parisian career by selling his sketches to big names in sculpture and design such as Féraud and Jacques Delahaye. A spotlight for the designer who presented his very first fashion show in the famous Vivienne gallery in 1970. And things accelerated since he opened his first boutique in Paris called the Jungle Jap, a spot entirely devoted to women's fashion. A clever mix of classic and modern, the Kenzo style amazes and combines Western and Eastern influences. Success was achieved and the house joined the LVMH group in 1993. Six years after the launch of his eponymous brand, Kenzo Takada gave way to Gilles Rosier who became the artistic director for the women's collections while Roy Krejberg took over. head of the men's collections. Quickly, the torch passed to Antonio Marras before giving way eight years later to the creative couple Huberto Leon and Carol Lim then to Felipe Oliviera Baptista in 2019, marking the starting point of an era placed under the sign of modernity. Visionary, the label does not set aside traditions. The women's kimono appears on catwalks around the world in innovative, fresh and colorful materials. Recognizable at first glance, Kenzo fashion does not go unnoticed and is adorned with Japanese prints, shimmering colors and clean lines. Committed, Kenzo is leading a film project in 2017 with the main theme of the future of our planet. This new cultural breath opens the way to new, unprecedented collaborations, notably in 2019 with the world-famous astrologer Susan Miller, whom Kenzo called upon for the release of the Tali bag. After two years at Kenzo , Felipe Oliviera leaves the reins of artistic direction of the house to Nigo in September 2021. Real name Tomoaki Nagao, the Japanese designer is known in the streetwear world thanks in particular to his label A Bathing Ape . He launched his own clothing brand in Tokyo in 1993 and has since made his mark in the industry. The new artistic director thus brings a touch of his deliberately urban universe. During his career, he has already signed numerous collaborations which have refined his taste for street style: first with Supreme in 2002, Kanye West in 2007, Comme des Garçons in 2012, and with Virgil Abloh for the men's collections from Louis Vuitton in 2020. Nigo's resolutely contemporary style shapes a new vision for Kenzo ; that of “real-to-wear”, a real wardrobe built to satisfy the desires of the post-digital mentality. A realistic approach to fashion transcends the conventional labels of formal, casual or even streetwear. This creative encounter between the founder and his heir amplifies the message that Kenzo has conveyed since its beginnings: a contemporary universe that does not forget its past.
