There is a paradox at Maison Margiela that does not exist elsewhere: if all labels are built on the talent and reputation of their artistic director, generally resulting in a cult of personality, the French house has built a large part of its story about the invisibility of its eponymous founder. As iconic as he is mysterious, Martin Margiela is one of the great couturiers of the 20th century of whom few photos exist and who only gave one interview during his career. Graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) in 1984 alongside the Belgian fashion avant-garde of the time (Walter Van Beirendonck, Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten , Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee ), he made his debut at Jean Paul Gaultier for whom he worked until 1987. The following year he founded his eponymous label and was praised by the fashion world and the public alike following his first fashion show in October 1988. His fashion, which deconstructs and reconstructs clothing, hits the mark. In 1994, the brand launched the concept of Replica, which offers to recreate and revisit clothes, scents or objects gleaned from the four corners of the world. Initially intended for women, the brand unveiled its first menswsear collection in 1998 and gained the Haute Couture designation in 2012. Innovative, Martin Margiela was one of the first designers to use recycled clothing and use oversized proportions. But although his house experienced unprecedented success, the man always remained unattainable. So much so that his departure from the brand he founded was announced backwards, a clarification added well after the fact. Under his leadership, the house produces pieces that are still iconic today, such as the Tabi ankle boots and the 5AC bag and more recently the Glam Slam.
Since 2014, John Galliano has taken over the reins of creation which was subsequently renamed Maison Margiela . Trained at the Central Saint Martins School in London, John Galliano founded his brand in 1984. His recognition came in the mid-1990s. Appointed creative director of ready-to- porter and Haute Couture at Givenchy in 1995, he succeeded the following year to Gianfranco Ferré at Dior as Creative Director of Haute Couture and women's ready-to- porter . A position he held brilliantly for nearly twelve years.
