Named after its creator, Martine Rose is a men's clothing brand that shakes up the codes of ready-to- porter with subversive creations, although designed to be worn every day. Since the creation of her label in 2007, the British designer has made normality the signature of her brand by pushing an anti-glamorous vision to its climax. A daring bet which, for more than ten years, has attracted a public fond of paradoxes, well beyond the English borders. The recipe for success ? Fashion shows organized in unlikely places like a climbing club or a food court in Shoreditch and models with diverse and varied measurements and physiques, presented without makeup or sophisticated hairstyles. On the ready-to- porter side, Martine Rose focuses on outrageous volumes and oversized frames, a taste for excess that elle cheerfully cultivates. Graduated from Middlesex University in 2002, elle founded LMNOP, a first brand, a year later with Tamara Rothstein. Following the closure of this first label in 2005, elle focused on the beginnings of her eponymous brand, initially dedicated to men's shirts. Supported by the Prince's Trust (an association which helps young British entrepreneurs) in its early days, Martine Rose was also noticed by Fashion East and NEWGEN, which support emerging designers. Having grown up in the South London neighborhoods, the designer draws inspiration from her Jamaican roots and the rave and hip-hop subcultures of the 1990s to imagine her collections. The days spent at Clapham Common as well as the sleepless nights at Camden Palace allowed him to forge a very particular aesthetic but which also resonates with an entire generation. The result ? An exaggeration of proportions and a multiplication of combinations that clash: square-toed sandals, threadbare denim and hooded sweatshirts rub shoulders with draped jackets, baggy pants and pleated shirts. In a word, the look of an era.
