Few designers can boast as much consistency as Paul Smith . In the fashion industry for almost fifty years, the British designer is at the head of a small business that has not experienced the crisis. His niche? “Classic with a twist”. In other words: basics revisited so you never get bored. Pop colors, fun prints, original cuts, the British designer's creations are recognizable at first glance. Born in Beeston, Nottinghamshire (United Kingdom), Paul Smith initially intended for a completely different activity: cycle racing. From the age of 12 to 18, the future designer participated in competitions and trained religiously every weekend. But an accident when he came of age immobilized him for several months and put an end to his dream. When he leaves the hospital, he changes circles and meets Pauline, who will become his wife, at a party. Trained at the Royal College of Art in London, the latter also taught him to understand the subtleties of clothing. Even today, elle holds a key position within the company. Having left school at the age of 15 without any qualifications, Paul Smith was employed by a clothing warehouse. In 1970, he opened his first eponymous boutique, where he sold his creations as well as pieces from certain already well-established brands. And it was not until 1976 that the designer presented his first ready-to- porter line for men, during Paris Fashion Week. Success was achieved and the business took off little by little. So much so that in 1993, the designer announced the creation of a first women's line. Recognized by the public and the fashion industry as one of its leading figures, he notably received the Outsanding Achievement Award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards.
