At a time of ever more advanced technological advances, certain objects from the past have been given a new lease of life in recent years. This is the case with instant photography. Imperfect but undeniably magical, this vintage camera offers a freeze frame in our busy daily lives by capturing for a few minutes a moment of life with an immortal memory.
Its inventor is an American named Edwin Land. A graduate in physics studies, he is interested in the polarization of light and invents numerous devices: viewfinders, navigation optics and relief cartography. In 1937, he founded the Polaroid company, initially specializing in the manufacture of sunglasses. However, it was in 1948 that elle took a real turning point after the introduction of the first instant camera. Edwin Land owes this revolutionary idea to his 4-year-old daughter who demanded to see the photo immediately after taking it.
First in black and white, it was not until 1963 that colors were added to these photos with the creation of the Polacolor film. Amateurs and professionals alike, no one remains indifferent to the instant image which will also find its place in the medical field. Over time, many artists such as Andy Warhol, Helmut Newton, Robert Mapplethrope and David Hockney were inspired by this tool with its nostalgic charm to present their work.
With the impetus of digital technology, society is going through difficult trials that are leading it to the edge of the precipice. However, in 2008 Florian Kaps, André Bosman and Marwan Saba took over the business and inaugurated the Impossible Project to restart the film making process. Four years later, Oskar Smolokowski was appointed head of the company and gave it new impetus by multiplying collaborations such as Star Wars The Mandalorian, Peanuts, Sandqvist and Fragment Design. Au printemps 2017, the brand regained its original name and was called Polaroid Originals. The emblematic models have been brought up to date and retain their retro look which makes them perfect decorative objects. 3,2,1...smile!
