Rick Owens man
“Pope of Gothic”, “Lord of Darkness”, many are the nicknames given to Rick Owens who never leaves anyone indifferent. This 56-year-old Californian began his career late in life. After studying painting and sculpture at the Otis College of Arts & Design in Los Angeles, he launched into working life and met Michèle Lamy, who would become his wife and muse. In 1994 the Rick Owens brand was created and sold exclusively in the hyper-selective Charles Gallay boutique. Following an appearance in Vogue Paris by Kate Moss wearing a Rick Owens jacket, the latter captured the attention of Anna Wintour who opened the doors to New York Fashion Week where he showed for the first time in 2002 That same year he won the Emerging Talent Award awarded by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), an award followed by the Cooper-Hewitt Design Award in 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Now an adopted Parisian, Rick Owens is part of the anti-fashion movement of the 1990s. The designer flees trends and submits a dissident and radical vision of fashion. Among its flagship models we distinguish the boiled leather jacket, asymmetrical cardigans and dresses, harem pants with unfinished seams and fitted jackets with extra-long sleeves creating a sportswear wardrobe with grunge accents. His fashion shows are an opportunity to showcase his impertinent approach and his moral metaphors in his counter-current collections which create an event, astonish, outrage or command admiration.
