Telfar Man

If Telfar reached posterity thanks to a bag that took Instagram by storm in 2019, the brand is nevertheless much more than a small label launched on the social network two years ago. Behind this first name from Liberia hides Telfar Clemens, a New Yorker born in Queens. After several years spent in Liberia and Maryland, he returned to New York to pursue business studies at Pace University. Passionate about fashion and unable to find the clothes that interest him, he begins very early to imagine pieces that he wears every day. In 2005, he launched his eponymous brand. “It’s not for you,” says the slogan. “It’s for everyone.” A concept that he has been working hard to prove (successfully) since the beginning. His fashion? Genderless. Its price positioning? Accessible. In 2013, he was joined in the adventure by Babak Radboy, a former artistic director with a background in advertising and co-founder of the Shanzai Biennale. In 2017, he won the prestigious CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. At stake ? Worldwide exposure and a grant of $400,000. Enough to help him develop his business.
