The man who spoke to thousands of noses

Our story begins at the same time as that of our founder, William Penhaligon. A humble Cornish barber who had access to the English royal court and who was the barber to the Shah of Persia. It was then 1870.

William's first perfume was Hammam Bouquet, inspired by the Turkish baths where he was a barber, cutting the hair of Mayfair's golden youth. The scent was one of a kind. He became the darling of the golden youth.

Luckily, William had more than one perfume up his sleeve. A myriad of other fragrances followed, giving the barber businessman status in the upper echelons of British society. But perhaps William's most remarkable creation is this: the company that bears his name.

A century and a half later, Penhaligon's has joined the ranks of the most prestigious perfume houses in the world. With our two royal distinctions, we always seduce the most discerning nostrils in the world with our bewitching, eminently British perfumes.

William himself could not have done better.
