Universal Standard woman
At a time when fashion wants to be more inclusive, several brands are implementing new initiatives. Unisex cuts, capsule collections, new sizes... but few labels have gone as far as Universal Standard . Founded in 2015 by Alexandra Waldman and Polina Veksler, the brand aims to dress all women. Based on the observation that elle never found clothes in her size (which always fluctuated between sizes 48 and 52) in stores, Alexandra Waldman simply took the initiative to design her own. In 2015, accompanied by her friend Polina Veksler, this former fashion journalist began by finding a factory capable of manufacturing Universal Standard pieces, in Peru. The same year, the brand launched its first collection consisting of eight models... which ended up out of stock in barely a week.
Committed, the brand wants to change the lives of the women elle now dresses, but elle would also like to change the industry. The idea? Create an environment where a size 50 can find the same top as a size 32. Aesthetics? Fashionable and feminine pieces, cut from quality materials and available at affordable prices. So that everyone can afford the clothes elle want and keep them as long as elle can. And while 70% of American women are a size 46 or larger, it is strange that the majority of brands barely go up to 42. Universal Standard sizing? From 32 to 72 for the collection Foundation, composed of basics around which to build a wardrobe that is both elegant and comfortable. And the brand has already started to bring other players in its wake: from J.Crew to Goop via Rodarte, several labels have been keen to get closer to this new way of thinking and creating.
